Kearns Residents awakened by a Loud Boom seek for answers
After being awakened by a LOUD boom during the early hours of the morning, Kearns, Utah residents are beginning to bring their concerns to social media for reassurance. Many suspect fireworks, explosions, or gunshots as tension and questions arise.
12 October was supposed to be a peaceful night for the Kearns community until many residents were awakened around 1:30 a.m. by a loud noise similar to a fireworks display or gunshots. After the incident caused concern for many, they took to social media to solve the mystery. “1:35 AM and a very loud boom that sounded like echoing. In the direction of 6200 S and Bangerter,” a resident wrote, while another said, “It’s like a homemade firework or rocket. There’s a whistling sound, then a loud boom that sounds like bombs and sometimes shakes my windows.” Many began sharing videos and doorbell camera footage of the time of the loud boom to piece together what happened, but as of now, nobody knows what is really going on.
On the same day, Fox 13 News released an article on the matter, stating that “[Their] report will be updated as [they] learn any new information,” but it has not been updated yet. I had the chance to interview one of the Kearns residents affected by the issue as well as Kearns Mayor Kelly Bush.
Jordyn Hill, who lives near 6500 S 4000 W, described the loud noises as happening “in the middle of the night, sometime around 2 or 3 AM.” The noises have been startling, and while initially curious, Jordyn admitted, “I didn’t feel comfortable going outside.” After talking with neighbors, Jordyn learned that others heard it too, with some thinking it might be “a firework or maybe even a small explosion.” The events have left his family feeling “a bit uneasy,” with his kids especially frightened. To feel safer, they are “more cautious about locking our doors and keeping an eye on any strange activity” and are considering installing a new security camera.
Mayor Kelly Bush said that the source of the noise remains unknown to her and the police department, but they are exploring various possibilities, including “industrial activity to possible construction work in the Thoele area.” She highlighted that the biggest issue has been “the disruption of peace for our residents, especially those who have been losing sleep over this.” The Kearns UPD has stepped up efforts by “increasing patrols in the area during the hours when the noise has been reported” and is collaborating with local businesses to investigate. To the community, she advises staying calm and suggests, “report any unusual activity to Kearns UPD as soon as they notice it.”
While the exact cause of the mysterious booms remains unclear, the residents of Kearns are staying vigilant, seeking answers, and hoping for a resolution that will restore peace to their community. Until more information is uncovered, the authorities continue their investigation, and residents are encouraged to stay alert and report any unusual occurrences

Project Brief: “Kearns and West Jordan Residents awakened by Loud Boom”
Project Objective
This article is meant to inform Kearns and West Jordan residents about the loud boom that was heard on October 12, 2024, around 1:30 a.m., causing concern within the community. The article provides insight about the incident through interviews with local residents and officials. It also raises awareness of the ongoing investigation.
Subtopics:
The loud boom and community reactions, as shared on social media.
Testimonies from a local resident and Kearns Mayor Kelly Bush.
The actions being taken by the Kearns police department.
Encourage the community to remain vigilant and report any unusual activity.
For the article I used the following deliverables: An article featuring eyewitness accounts and official statements. An overview of social media discussions and shared footage. Publication of the article with relevant updates, should new information arise from ongoing investigations. I reached out to Kearns Major Kelly Bush to ask some questions and her opinion on the matter. I also interviewed a second person, Mr. Hill, to get more insights and a different perspective about the situation. They were easy to work with because they shared their honest opinion about the matter and shared new things about the situation.
Risks/Challenges: The only thing that is at risk about the article, is the lack of resolution about the loud noise for a follow-up article. Many residents will never know what really happened if the mystery is never solved.
Target Audience
Kearns and West Jordan, Utah residents who have been affected or are concerned about the mysterious noise.

Park City Mountain raises parking prices for the 2024-25 Winter Season
Park City Mountain raises parking prices for the 2024-25 Winter Season starting November 08.
While the reservations at Mountain Village Garage remain the same at $46, the fee for paid reservations increased from $26.65 to $28 per vehicle per day, according to Park City Mountain’s official website. These updates will begin November 08, until the end of the season.
Tom Smith, a staff member at Park City Mountain, explained that the recent parking price increases were necessary to cover rising operational costs, particularly for maintaining infrastructure and improving services such as shuttle operations and snow removal. “The decision to raise parking prices was not made lightly. We want to ensure that our guests continue to receive a high-quality experience,” he said.
In terms of benefits for members, Smith emphasized improvements in convenience and accessibility, such as more frequent shuttle services and better parking management tools. He also mentioned plans to introduce reserved parking areas closer to the lifts. “We’re investing in services that will make the parking experience smoother for everyone.”
For visitors looking to save money, Smith recommended purchasing a season parking pass early, carpooling, or taking advantage of parking discounts during off-peak times. As for the possibility of future price increases, Smith acknowledged that while they can’t predict everything, they strive to keep prices stable. “We’ll continue to prioritize transparency and give as much notice as possible if any changes are needed,” he assured.
According to their website, there is free parking available at the Canyons Village base area, Park City High School (on weekends and holidays) and High Valley Transit Park-n-Ride locations like Richardson Flat and Ecker Hill. Besides this, Reservations are always free for cars with four or more occupants.
While the parking price increase at Park City Mountain may be an adjustment for some visitors, there are still ways for guests to manage costs. Park City Mountain remains committed to ensuring that visitors continue to enjoy a smooth and accessible experience on and off the mountain.

Resilience and Faith
Isabel Berret, a 52-year-old Cape Verdean immigrant, stands as a testament to overcoming life’s challenges with grace and determination. From her childhood in the small African nation of Cape Verde to building a new life in the United States, Isabel’s path is filled with trials, triumphs, and the presence of faith.
A Humble Beginning in Cape Verde
Isabel was born in Praia, the capital city of Cape Verde, a small island off the coast of West Africa. Her early life was marked by loss and uncertainty. “I never met my dad, and my mom passed away when I was four,” she said. Raised by her grandmother and aunts, Isabel experienced a childhood shaped by strong familial ties but bittersweet with the absence of her parents.
“My grandma was strict, but I had a happy childhood,” she says. Surrounded by cousins, many of whom were marines, Isabel and her grandmother would cook for them when they returned from fishing trips. It was during these moments that she found her love for cooking seafood like bacalao and crab with rice.
Adolescence: A Period of Struggle
While her childhood was filled with moments of joy, Isabel’s teenage years were notably more difficult. “I wasn’t able to enjoy myself like my friends,” because of family obligations and financial limitations. The absence of her parents weighed heavily on her heart. It was during this period that Isabel began searching for answers through religion. “I started reading the Bible and going to the Evangelic church,” she shares. Church helped her to find hope and light during those hard years.
Navigating Adult Life and Escaping an Abusive Relationship
Right after finishing high school, she got into an abusive relationship and became pregnant with her first daughter. The cycle of abuse left her feeling trapped, “I was in a terrible state,” she admits. She turned to religion again, to find answers and support, leaning into prayer and her faith. This faith, she believes, was essential in helping her find the strength to keep going. Despite the difficulties she faced as a young mother, Isabel’s belief in a higher power helped her and guided her through this painful chapter in her life.
Moving to the United States
Isabel made the difficult decision to leave her daughter in Cape Verde and migrate to the United States. She arrived in Rhode Island with little more than hope, determination, and a willingness to adapt to a new culture. “It was hard. I had to learn English and adjust to life here,” but she slowly adapted to the new culture and was led to people who helped her.
It wasn’t long before she became pregnant again, this time with a second daughter and, later, a son. Life as an immigrant and single mother was challenging, but Isabel’s faith remained unwavering. “God has always been my guide,” she explains, during the early years as a foreignerin a new country.
Finding Love and a New Faith Community
Twelve years ago, Isabel’s life changed when she eventually found the love of her life on Facebook through an LDS Singles group. After months of online communication, she flew to Utah to meet him in person, and they were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple.
Although she had been a member of an Evangelical church for years, when the missionaries from the church knocked on her door, she felt that they were sent by God. “All the word from God is good,” she says, explaining how her daughter’s baptism set the example for both her and her youngest son to follow.
Lessons from a Life of Faith
Today, Isabel reflects on her life as a journey of peace and gratitude. “I’ve been through a lot, but God has always been with me,” she says. From her childhood in Cape Verde to her years as an immigrant and mother in the United States, Isabel’s story teaches me to overcomeadversity through a belief in God.
When asked what advice she would offer to younger generations searching for meaning and guidance, Isabel’s message is simple but true: “Start by saying honest prayers to God because He is your Father and loves you. Read a few verses from the Bible as often as you can, and start going to your local church. These three things will help you find God and feel peace and joy.”
Her life lessons have been inspiring to me during challenging times, and I hope others find hope in her words, too.
